GAFFNEY, S.C. - One person is dead after a chase and standoff that ended at the KOA Kampground on Sarratt School Road near Gaffney in Cherokee County.

The coroner's office says the man killed was 53-year-old Clint Evans McKinney. He lived at the campground for several months before his death.

Authorities say it all started as a chase around 1:30 p.m. when troopers noticed a man driving dangerously.

A short chase ended at the campground when the suspect, who lives in a camper there, barricaded himself inside and fired shots at officials.  Troopers did not fire back at first.

When SWAT arrived, a gas canister was thrown inside, but the suspect threw it back outside and fired more shots.

Officers even attempted to use a shotgun-taser to stun the man but it did not work because of the man's thick jacket.

The standoff ended after authorities went to the door of the camper and the suspect fired shots, prompting officials to return fire.  The suspect was hit several times and was killed.

"It was very scary and anytime there is an officer involved shooting it is not a fun situation," Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said.

No officers were hurt in the incident.  State investigators are taking over. Four officers involved are now on leave, in accordance with policy.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler stated that autopsy results indicate that McKinney died as the results of one of four gunshot wounds inflicted by officers during the incident. He added that toxicology samples were taken and the results, which normally take between six and eight weeks, are pending.
