EASLEY, S.C. - Pickens County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man after a standoff early Saturday morning.

Chief Deputy Creed Hashe of the sheriff's office said that deputies responded to a home on Kingswood Way in Easley around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a man attempting to break into a home. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered that the man, Kelvin Bernard Smith, 42, of Easley, had forced his way into the home and was holding a woman hostage with a knife.

Hashe said that the sheriff's office SWAT Team, along with crisis negotiators, responded to the scene and surrounded the residence in an attempt to negotiate with Smith and persuade him to release the woman. The woman was released after an hour of negotiations.

According to Hashe, Smith walked out of the home and onto the front porch of the home with the knife. He was tased by deputies after repeated attempts to get him to drop the knife.

Smith was treated at the scene for minor lacerations to the neck and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was subsequently released and transported to the Pickens County Detention Center where he will be formally charged with several felonies, including arrest warrants from Greenville County.
