Greenville City Council Taking Up Hand-Held Device Ban

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Greenville City Council will take the first vote Monday on a proposed ban on using hand-held devices while driving.

Under the ordinance, drivers wouldn't be able to talk or text on their phones unless they're legally parked. It covers people behind the wheel of a vehicle, motorcycle, moped or bicycle.

There would be exceptions for hands-free devices, emergency responders or anyone reporting a crime or emergency situation to the authorities.

Penalties include a $100 fine for the first offense. The second time a driver breaks the law, it costs $200. On the third offense, the fine goes up to $300. After that, the court could seize and destroy the devices.

The ordinance would require another vote in February before taking effect April 1.

City Council meets at 5:30pm in the City Hall Council Chambers, 10th Floor, 206 S. Main Street.
