High Speed Chase Ends After Suspect Smashes Into Parked Car

Posted: Updated:
ANDERSON, S.C. - A suspect is in the hospital after a high-speed chase spanning two local counties.

It began in Hart County, GA on Highway 29 near Franklin County, GA Monday night around 11:45. The chase lasted a little over 20 minutes, and spanned about 30 miles.

According to Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland, a call came in for a "suspicious vehicle" parked in a store parking lot. Sheriff Cleveland says when the first deputy pulled in to check on the situation, the suspect pulled out.

The deputy followed the suspect a short distance, turning his blue lights on right as a second deputy pulled up. Sheriff Cleveland says that's when the suspect tried to ram his vehicle into the second deputy's vehicle. The chase then ensued.

Sheriff Cleveland says the chase went all the way through the town of Hartwell, across the Hartwell Dam, into South Carolina, and into downtown Anderson. The sheriff says at times, the suspect was clocked at over 100 mph.

Nearing the end of the high-speed chase, the suspect crashed into the back of a parked car on Park Drive in the city limits of Anderson. Anderson City Fire had to use extrication equipment to free the suspect from the wreckage.

The sheriff says nobody was in the parked car.

The suspect was taken to the hospital.  He was later identified as Phoenix Stone, 37, of Washington state.

Stone has been charged with aggravated assault, felony eluding and reckless driving.  Additional charges are pending.

He is now being held at the Anderson County Detention Center where is awaiting extradition.
