Gaffney Councilman Bernard Smith Charged With DUI

A longtime Gaffney City Councilman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Shadrick Bernard Smith Jr. was is charged with DUI and having open alcohol containers in his vehicle.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said troopers arrested Smith after a checkpoint stop about 6 p.m. Thursday night. Troopers said Smith, 66, was driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck.

Troopers said his blood-alcohol content was .12; the legal limit in South Carolina is .08.
Smith was also charged with an open container violation.

Smith, who could not be reached for comment, has served on the city council since the early 1990s.
