Taylors Company Apologizes For Using Sandy Hook Shooting Photo In Ad

Posted: Updated:
A Taylors company is apologizing after using a recently released crime scene photo from the Sandy Hook school shooting in a marketing email to sell their bullet proof glass.

Commercial Window Shield used the police photo showing the front window of Sandy Hook Elementary shattered by bullets fired by gunman, Adam Lanza, in December of 2012.

The company has recently installed their shatter resistant window film in seven school buildings in Connecticut. The email was sent to other school and town officials to show how their product can protect against similar tragedies, but many of those officials were outraged, saying the stunt reopened wounds.

"To me when I saw this picture it brought the whole day back to me,” said Monroe (CT) First Selectman, Steven Vavreck in an interview with Connecticut affiliate WFSB.

Monroe is home to the new school for Sandy Hook Students, following the tragedy that left 20 children and 6 adults dead.

“I hope no one does this again because it's the wrong thing to do. Sell your glass because it's good, but don't do it using a real crime scene,” he said.

7 On Your Side reached out to Commercial Window Shield, Friday.

They did want to speak on camera, but provided us with their apology listed below:

Subject: Our Sincerest Apologies

As you may know, we sent out an email yesterday regarding the installation of security window film.  Although it was not our intention, we understand that the email was insensitive and disrespectful.  Our intention was not to profit from a tragedy.  Security window film is a current topic of discussion among many schools and towns throughout the country, and we were attempting to shine light on this safety measure.  We took the wrong approach with the email, and would like to offer our most sincere apologies; not only to those that received this email but also to the entire Newtown community.

We ask that you are able to forgive us for this gross misjudgment as we did not mean to re-open unhealed wounds.  I, myself, am a mother of a 2 year old and am pregnant with my second child.  The fact that I have unintentionally disrespected those affected by this tragedy makes me sick.

If you would like to speak with one of us further, please don't hesitate to call.  We would appreciate the opportunity to apologize one-on-one.

Thank you for taking the time to read this; and, again, we apologize wholeheartedly.

Sincerely,

Sarah Staley
