BBB: Research Your Tax Preparer Before You File

You may already be thinking about filing your taxes, but do you know who to trust with your information?

The Better Business Bureau warns there may be shops that will file your taxes, then disappear after tax season is over.

Those businesses could leave you with a mess if your taxes aren't filed properly.

Experts recommend you get a point of contact for your preparer, incase the business isn't there later on.

They also say you should get copies of all your documents that you bring with.  Your tax preparer should also give you a copy of your tax return.

Experts say you should keep those documents for at least 3 years.

The BBB also warns to watch for hidden fees.  They suggest going over the fine print before you let them file your taxes.

You can also check to make sure your tax preparer has a legitimate license to do so.

They should be a CPA, tax attorney, enrolled agent, or certified E-file provider.

All tax preparers should have a preparer tax identification number or PTIN by the IRS.

You can request that information before someone files your taxes.
