Woman charged with killing great-aunt makes court appearance

BEAUFORT, N.C. - The Carteret County woman accused of murdering her great-aunt and burning her house down went before a judge Tuesday morning.

32-year-old Rhonda Hagan made her first court appearance today after being indicted by a grand jury last month.

Deputies say she killed her great aunt, 90-year-old Goldie Hall, in September 2012 after a dispute over money. An autopsy shows Hall died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Deputies say Hagan dumped Hall's body in the woods, set her house on fire, then called 911 to report the fire.

The district attorney is expected to decide in April whether to charge Hagan for capital murder, in which case she could face the death penalty.

Hagan is charged with murder, kidnapping, arson, larceny, and failing to report a death.

Her mother, 64-year-old Phyllis Williams, is charged with obstruction of justice after deputies say she helped Hagan cover up the murder.
