Wed.'s $400M Powerball Jackpot is 4th Largest in History

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, S.C. - If you're feeling lucky, you may want to buy a lottery ticket before Wednesday night.

That's when the next Powerball drawing is scheduled. The $400 million jackpot is the game's fourth largest.

The game already produced a $2 million winner here in South Carolina. If another Palmetto State resident were to win, it would be the 20th since the Powerball game changed two years ago.

"There is no denying that Powerball® has strengthened its brand and players in South Carolina have liked the result," said SC Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea, who reports brisk ticket sales in South Carolina, a state still reveling in a $399 million jackpot-winning ticket sold in September.

If no one wins Wednesday night's millions, the jackpot will loom even larger for Saturday.

"Big jackpot runs are incredibly exciting as more players enter the game," said Bethea. "Even if we don't see one of our own players win a million dollars, we will all benefit for a possible $2 million to $4 million in additional funding for education."

South Carolinians looking to take a chance on the $400 million jackpot with a cash payout of $227 million, must purchase $2 Powerball® tickets by 9:59 p.m. for Wednesday's 10:59 p.m. drawing. The odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 176 million.
