COLUMBIA, S.C. -

A bill banning abortion in South Carolina at 20 weeks of pregnancy and beyond is heading to the House floor. The House Judiciary Committee voted in favor of the proposal Tuesday.

“This bill states that for many different reasons that a baby at the age of 20 weeks is capable of feeling pain, so from that point forward no abortion should be performed,” said Rep. Wendy Nanney, R-Greenville.

Doctors could face felony charges if they disregard the ban, unless the mother’s life is in danger.

“If the life of the mother is in danger one can be performed, but it tries to protect the life of the child,” said Nanney.

A federal court ruled a similar bill in Arizona unconstitutional, but supporters say South Carolina’s measure would face a more conservative panel of judges.
