GLADE SPRING, VA (WJHL) - The community is still in shock by the shooting in southwest Virginia that resulted in the deaths of three people revered by the community.

Police say, Kevin Dale Palmer, 44, went on a shooting rampage early Tuesday morning after breaking into his in-laws’ home on Graceland Lane in Glade Spring, VA.

Palmer shot and killed his wife Kristin Palmer, 46, his son Griffin Lane Palmer, 17, and Kristin’s mother Nancy Griffin, 74. Kristin’s father, Terry Griffin, 75, survived the attack and is listed in fair condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Kevin Palmer allegedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Griffin Palmer was a student at Patrick Henry High School.

Since the attack, Principal Keith Perrigan says there have been counselors at Patrick Henry comforting students and staff. Perrigan says “everyone is grieving.”

Perrigan adds there are  plans for a community vigil to remember Griffin Palmer in Patrick Henry High School’s auditorium Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. It's open to the public and everyone is asked to wear purple.

Students were granted permission to wear bandanas this Friday in honor of Griffin Palmer, according to Principal Perrigan.

A memorial has also been planned the same evening at Virginia High School in Bristol, VA

Bristol Virginia Public Schools superintendent said in a tweet Wednesday morning that counselors will be on-hand at Virginia High. According to the schools website, a memorial for Kristin Palmer will be in the auditorium Thursday evening at 6:30.

A flag is flying at half-staff at VHS and students and staff set up a memorial in the auditorium of the school in memory of English and Drama teacher Kristin Palmer.

Also, many in the community changed their Facebook profiles in support of the victims.
