They've mastered their local spelling bees and now 45 students from the Anderson, Greenwood, Abbeville and Oconee areas will compete for a chance to go to the Scripp's National Spelling Bee.

"There's a lot of hard work and determination in their faces you can see it," says Olivia Mullikin, a contestant from Mount Lebanon Elementary/

Mullikin competed at the Regional Bee last year and hopes to crack the top 10 this year. The word that got her to Regionals this year is "abstruse."

Mullikin's advice for success is to ask for as many of the hints as you can. Spellers can ask for a word's definition, language of origin and for it to be used in a sentence.

"That gives you more time to think about what the word is," Mullikin says.

To many Spelling Bees are just about spouting out the right letters in the correct order but for these competitors. It's a sport.

"In a game like soccer or chess you're trying to see whose going to make the wrong move," Mullikin says, "That's what you're doing in spelling; you're trying to see whose gonna spell the wrong word."

The Independent Mail Regional Spelling Bee is on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Anderson University's Henderson Auditorium.
