A family reportedly from South Carolina was rescued when a woman drove a minivan into the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday off Daytona Beach.

A man from western North Carolina was one of the first people on the scene when a pregnant woman from South Carolina drove a minivan carrying her three children into the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday off Daytona Beach.

“I threw my car in park and I took off running toward the van,” said Tim Tesseneer of Rutherfordton, NC.

Tesseneer and his family were on vacation in Florida and were spending the afternoon at Daytona Beach.

As they family was driving along the shoreline, Tesseneer spotted a minivan dangerously close to the water’s edge.

“We thought they were just having a good time you know, ‘hey, look at us we are breaking the rules, we are driving in the water.’”

Tesseneer help pull the mother and her children- ages 3, 9 and 10 from the vehicle.

“We saw a kid sitting on the mother's lap trying to pull the steering wheel out of her hands and turn away from the water,” Tesseneer said.

His family caught the whole rescue on camera.

Investigators still do not know what led the woman, who was visiting central Florida from South Carolina to drive into the water.

“She will be undergoing mental evaluation and we will need to determine: is it a medical incident is it a mental incident,” says Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson. “Also at this time, we have to evaluate it.”

The children are currently in the care of protective services.

“One of them hugged me,” says Tesseneer, “and I told them they are going to be okay, things are going to be fine."

Tesseneer doesn’t consider what he did as heroic. He feels lucky to have been in the right place, at the right time.
