GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Gaffney Fire Chief believes the cause of a fire that killed a mother and her daughter was accidental in the home that had no smoke detectors.

Five people were in the home on Cherokee Avenue when the fire was reported around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. The home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived at that location near Ninth Street next to the Auto Stop Food Store..

The Cherokee County Coroner says a grandmother, grandfather and a young boy got out of the home, but an 11-year old girl was still inside the home.

The young boy told investigators his mother, 43, went back inside the burning home to rescue his sister, but the two didn't make it back out.

The coroner's office has identified the victims as Evelyn Rodriguez and her daughter, Lynette Lara.  Their remains were found in separate rooms of the house.

Gaffney Fire Chief Jamie Caggiano said all indications are that there were no smoke detectors inside the house.

The three survivors were taken to Novant Hospital in Gaffney for treatment. The grandparents were suffering from smoke inhalation, but are expected to be all right.
