RALEIGH, N.C. -

Raleigh mayor Nancy McFarlane and seven others city leaders and entrepreneurs hit the road Thursday afternoon for Austin, Texas.

McFarlane said their goal is to observe how Austin handles things in terms of small businesses and apply those practices to make Raleigh better.

"It's incredibly important," said McFarlane. "It's what keeps your city thriving it is what keeps businesses coming. It's what keeps people wanting to move here. Things like this I think matter very much."

The mayor said she chose Austin because the two cities are comparable.  During the trip, city leaders will meet with the Austin Chamber of Commerce. The crew will return to the Triangle on March 16.
