The 3-year-old Columbia boy on life support after being injured in a wreck with a suspected drunk driver has died.

Josiah Jenkins died Tuesday at Palmetto Health Richland, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the car he was riding was struck by Lonnie Gross III, a suspected repeat DUI offender.  His arrest record shows Gross has a history of prior DUI arrests and convictions.

Lonnie Gross III, 44, is being held without bond in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

He is charged with a felony DUI, driving under suspension and a seat belt violation. After Jenkins death, charges were upgraded to felony DUI resulting in death.

The boy's mother, Latoya Jenkins, was injured in the crash but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened on North Springs Road about 10 p.m. Friday night. A car driven by Gross veered left into Jenkins' oncoming vehicle, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins, the boy's great Uncle posted this message:

"I would like to thank everyone who has offered their support and prayers for Josiah and our family during the last four days and ask that you keep our family in your prayers today and in the days to come as we grieve the loss of such a wonderful boy who was taken from this world at such a young age."

"The family would also like to thank members of the Columbia Fire Department, Richland County EMS and South Carolina Highway Patrol for their professionalism, as well as the doctors and staff at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital for their exceptional care during this difficult time."
