LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. - A man is under arrest after a brief standoff involving a homemade explosive in Laurens County late Thursday afternoon.

Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said that deputies responded to a home on Community Center Road in Enoree to serve an arrest warrant for attempted murder on 40-year-old Thomas Whitehead Jr. According to Chastain, Whitehead threatened to use an explosive device against the deputies and began to struggle with them. The deputies tased Whitehead before he could use the explosive - which was a propane tank connected to a gas tank.

Deputies had to evacuate a half-mile radius from around the residence as the State Law Enforcement Division bomb squad responded to assist with dismantling the device. The evacuation order was lifted after a couple of hours but Chastain stated that a meth lab was also found during a subsequent search of the residence.

Whitehead was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is currently being held at the Johnson Detention Center in Laurens where he is awaiting a bond hearing. Further charges are pending.
