S. C. Unemployment Rates Drop, More People Working

South Carolina's unemployment rate dropped to 6.4 % in January 2014 from 6.6% in December 2013 meanwhile the National Unemployment rate is at 6.7%.

Will Carney just moved to South Carolina from Utah to find a better job and be closer to family. He says he can tell the economy is stronger in the Palmetto State.

"Definitely a lot better out here, a lot more opportunity," says Will Carney.

Governor Nikki Haley talked about the new numbers Monday. Governor Haley says South Carolina rate continues to drop because the state is focusing on jobs.

"The companies are coming left and right, people are getting back to work, it's what we want to see in South Carolina, but we're just getting started," Governor Haley says.

Curtis Simon, an associate professor in Clemson's Economics Department broke down the numbers and tells 7 On Your Side the drop comes because more people in South Carolina are working. He says that's a good sign because it means people aren't leaving the work force.

Simon says he would like to see the economy improve faster and says the recovery is still weak compared to previous recessions. Simon says you can get a better idea on how the market is doing by looking at the employment numbers. He points to the Manufacturing section losing around 100 jobs in January but the jobs in Manufacturing are still up from January 2013 to January 2014.

We asked Governor Haley about the slight drop in Manufacturing.

"The funnel is full on manufacturing jobs that are coming in what we're trying to do is make sure that the workforce gets trained fast enough to take these manufacturing jobs," Governor Haley says.
