COLUMBA, S.C. - South Carolina's top accountant is seeking the dismissal of ethics allegations that he used campaign money to accompany his girlfriend to the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Attorneys for Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom are asking the Ethics Commission on Wednesday to dismiss six charges of using campaign money for personal benefit.

The state Ethics Commission found probable cause last year that the 65-year-old Republican violated state ethics law. Eckstrom reported spending $1,642 in campaign money for gasoline, food and a hotel during the 2012 GOP convention in Florida. Eckstrom's girlfriend was an alternate delegate.

Eckstrom's staff says state law specifies that travel expenses connected to a political event can be paid out of campaign coffers.

If the panel upholds the charges, a hearing would be held later this year.
