COLUMBIA, S.C. -

Diabetes is a serious and costly health epidemic that is causing major problems for the state of South Carolina.

Legislators, Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and other diabetes advocates gathered at the Statehouse Thursday to focus on diabetes awareness. This disease has become a serious and costly health problem for South Carolina.

"People affected by diabetes has grown by 70 percent in ten years and so it has a huge impact on a cost aspect to the state of South Carolina. In fact, we spend more on diabetes care in South Carolina than we do on heart disease or AIDS or cancer," said Brannon.

The Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina is working to help the state through patient education and other outreach programs.

DHEC stresses the importance of healthy eating and physical activity to prevent and manage diabetes. If current trends continue, one in three U.S. adults could have diabetes by the year 2050.
