North Carolina researcher tries new method to treat cancer

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - Dr. Zhen Gu is a researcher at NC State and UNC working on a first of its kind experiment to treat breast cancer.

The new technique uses an energy molecule called ATP as a trigger to release an anti-cancer drug called Doxorubicin into cancerous cells.

Dr. Gu says unlike other treatments that release anti-cancer drugs into the body, his technique targets the tumor and cancer cells only.

"We want to make sure the drug can be accumulated in the tumor side," said Dr. Gu.

In the experiment, the Doxorubicin is carried in a nanoparticle to the tumor site. The nanoparticle then attaches to the tumor wall, and the cancer cells begin eating it. Once inside, the ATP helps release the drug directly into the cell.

This technique has only be tested on mice so far, but the results have been good.

Some people that have had family members affected by cancer hope these types of breakthroughs find cures for all cancers.

"I'm hoping they can get a cure for it," said William Proctor. "As much money has been spent on it, donations on it. So lets hope these new treatments can work out."

Dr. Gu says he hopes the technique will be ready to use on humans in a few years.
