Haywood County Teen Charged With Murdering Father Awaiting Extradition

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -
Deputies say a teenager charged with murdering her father is expected to be transported to Haywood County within the week.

The 17-year-old is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the shooting death of her father.

According to the Haywood County Sheriff's Office, Crystal Brooke Howell of Haywood County, NC was arrested Sunday in Richmond County, GA. There was a Haywood County warrant out for her arrest. The initial charge was concealing the death of her father, 50-year-old Michael Joseph Howell.

Deputies say Mr. Howell's body was discovered Saturday by potential renters of his property in the Sheepback Mountain Community near Maggie Valley.

According to autopsy results, Howell died from a single shotgun wound to the head. Shortly after, a murder warrant was issued for Crystal Howell, his daughter.

Crystal Howell is being held in jail in Georgia while awaiting extradition proceedings.
