SPARTANBURG, S.C - Woodruff named Western Carolina assistant and former Byrnes quarterback Trey Elder its new head coach Tuesday morning.

An early morning school board meeting was scheduled to select a replacement for Brian Lane, who departed last Monday for the top job at Byrnes.

Elder has spent the past three seasons as the wide receivers coach at Western Carolina.

He played collegiately at Appalachian State, and ended up playing a key role in their national championship runs in 2005 and 2007.

At Byrnes, he earned South Carolina's Mr. Football in 2003 as he led the Rebels to the second of four straight state tiels as a senior.

His prior high school coaching experience came as a Byrnes assistant and wide receivers coach in 2009.
