COLUMBIA, S.C. -

University of South Carolina students, officials and mascot Cocky are gathering on the historic Horseshoe to help unveil the school's new, registered tartan design.

Spokeswoman Peggy Binette says the garnet and black plaid design dubbed "Old Cocky" was chosen last year by students and alumni. The design is listed in the Scottish Register of Tartans as the school's official tartan.

Retailing professor Marianne Bickle from the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management is leading Wednesday's unveiling at 4 p.m. Bickle helped students work on the project.

The event is free and open to the public. It includes bagpipers, Cocky in the new tartan, refreshments, door prizes and official Carolina tartan merchandise for purchase. A portion of the proceeds helps fund student scholarships.
