Clinton Remains Identified As 2006 Missing Woman

Posted: Updated:
CLINTON, S.C. -

The skeletal remains found Tuesday near a firing range operated by Clinton Public Safety have been identified.

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office says they are that of 22-year-old Samantha Renee Smith. Smith went missing from her home on Leila Street in Clinton in the fall of 2006.

The remains were found when a logging company contractor was surveying a wooded area Tuesday afternoon at the property, which is owned by the city, off Highway 308 near Beards Fork Creek.

The remains were removed, along with several other pieces of evidence, authorities say.

Investigators don't suspect foul play in this case, but the cause of death is still undetermined.
