New windows, insulation and a heater helped keep the Farrows home warm during the previous winter months. The upgrades came from grant money Anderson County gets each year to update homes.

The money comes from the Department of Housing and Urban Development's HOME program. A portion of the money is given to Anderson County, Anderson City, Belton and to private organizations that build new homes for families.

This year Anderson County received $434,229. County planning director Bill West says they're able to help 6-8 homes each year.

Families have to meet certain income requirements to qualify. For example, a family of four has to make below $43,350. The homes also have to have a real need.

"If the only thing that's wrong is it needs a new coat of paint that's not what this program's for it's to repair serious life saving problems," West says.

The County does have a list of homes waiting but they are taking new applicants. Applications can be picked up at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street. You can also call 864-242-9733 or visit www.scacog.org.
