Brookwood Inn Lender, Manager Speak

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. - The lender and new manager of a condemned motel spoke publicly for the first time Thursday, nearly a week after it shut the motel down and forced dozens of families out.

The former owner's mortgage lender and newly-appointed management team lambasted the former owners, which it said are solely responsible for the "inhumane," living conditions. There were no smoke detectors in some of the rooms, the gas was shut off and there were cockroaches visible in traps.

"It was catastrophic," said Bhushan Khanna of Khanna Group of Hotels Inc. "We are here to make it right, and we will not rest unless we have made it right."

Khanna said he was unaware of the unsanitary conditions until sheriff's deputies contacted his office last week after tenants complained.

Khanna said his company is suing D&P Hospitality Group LLC, claiming it owes $1.1 million in back mortgage payments. Khanna said his company stopped receiving mortgage payments in July 2012.

The Spartanburg County Building Codes Department said it never received any formal complaints about the motel.

Khanna said he expects the hotel will reopen within the next few months.

D&P Hospitality Group LLC did not return a call for comment.
