SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

A seemingly ordinary day turned memorable for this class of preschoolers at St. Matthews Episcopal Church and unforgettable for one little girl.

“My dad is in Afghanistan,” said Cicely Sloan.

Cicely had not seen her dad in nearly seven months. He is a contractor with the U.S. Marine Corps., and was stationed at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan until Thursday.

Outside in the playground is where Cicely’s father Fredrick surprised her with his early arrival.

“Cicely and her sister Ciara, they both have been missing dad,” says mom Kia. “Cicely thought he was coming home this summer. She did not know today was the day."

Cicely broke down in tears when she saw her dad. The emotional reunion even caught Fredrick off guard.

“She almost made me cry,” Fredrick admits.

After 20 years of active duty in the Marines, the retired gunnery sergeant still wrestles with the reality of deployment.

“It is really hard at times to be away from them,” says Fredrick.

The homecoming will forever be a reminder to Fredrick and his family of what is worth fighting for.
