The Buncombe County Democratic Party says they have chosen Terry Van Duyn to replace the late Martin Nesbitt.

A tweet from the Democratic Party there Thursday night says Duyn will finish Nesbitt's term in the North Carolina General Assembly and will run for election in November.The election was held at the County Courthouse Thursday night.

According to a release from an Asheville Conservancy group, Van Duyn is a Democratic fundraiser, volunteer and activist.

Van Duyn was arrested during a Moral Monday protest in Raleigh last year.

The release also says Van Duyn beat out four other candidates in three rounds of voting.


Nesbitt, who had served in Senate District 49, died on March 8th after a brief battle with cancer.

Nesbitt was 67 years old.
