UNION COUNTY, S.C. -

Union County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man who they say fired gun shots to frighten a woman.

Robert Ruth, 51, is charged with criminal domestic violence high and aggravated by deputies. Ruth says the woman tried to attack him with a shovel.

Deputies were called to the home on Berry Farm Road in Union Friday at 3:30 a.m.

Ruth said the woman came home and tried to break into his home, so he fired gun shots into the air to "scare his old lady" according to the UCSO incident report.

The woman said she tried to defend herself using a shovel which led to a scuffle with Ruth.

The suspect's son and girlfriend along with two children - ages 13 and 7 - were in the house at the time of the incident.

Deputies determined Ruth was the aggressor and arrested him. He was being held Friday morning at the Union County jail.
