After Shooting, Dozens Gather For Vigil

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. - Dozens of people gathered outside the Spartanburg County Foundation to remember the man killed in a drive-by shooting Wednesday night.

Emery Williams died after someone fired several shots into his vehicle as he drove past the Westside Club on Willis Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some of those who gathered were friends and others strangers who wanted to pay their respects to a man who they said did so much for the community.

Faye Smith said when her brother's remains were found years after he went missing during the Vietnam war, Williams, who owned J.W. Woodward Funeral Home, offered to hold a memorial service. "He went over and beyond of service to please our family."

Crime statistics show the number of murders has fallen over the past two decades, but Williams' stepdaughter Stinson Ferguson said even one life is too many.

"When something like this happens it makes us feel a little disappointed about the community," she said, "and this is just the complete opposite."

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said Friday that investigator had no new information and urged anyone who might know something to come forward.
