Hearing Ends Without Testimony From Deaver

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A three-day hearing into the firing of State Bureau of Investigation agent Duane Deaver ended without his testimony.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that neither Deaver nor his attorneys offered comment after the hearing.

Deaver was fired in January 2011 after an independent review of the SBI crime lab concluded that analysts frequently misstated or falsely reported blood evidence in about 200 criminal cases spanning 16 years ending in 2003. Some of the most egregious violations were linked to Deaver.

Administrative Law Judge Jim Conner did hear Deaver's story through the voices current and former SBI employees, as well as Attorney General Roy Cooper's chief of staff.

SBI Director Greg McLeod testified in support of his decision to fire Deaver. His predecessor, Robin Pendergraft, sympathized with Deaver.
