SPARTANBURG, S.C - Spartanburg Public Safety is trying to identify a group of juveniles who attempted to start a fire in a wooded area near Carson Avenue in the city limits.

The fire happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area around the train tracks near the intersection of Carson Avenue and Crescent Avenue. According to a report obtained from Spartanburg Public Safety, two women noticed six juveniles - all believed to be between 10-12 years old - in the woods starting a fire. The women called 911 and the juveniles ran off as firefighters responded to put out the fire.

According to the report, an arson investigator with Spartanburg Public Safety spoke to one of the witnesses and also an employee with CSX Railroad who stated that he saw the juveniles start the fire as a train approached. The railroad employee said that he had to stop the train until firefighters were able to clear the area and determine it was safe to continue.

If anyone has any information about the identity of the juveniles they are asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
