SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

A South Carolina man faces attempted murder charges after law officers say he set fire to his rental house while officers were inside trying to arrest him.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said Monday that 44-year-old Larry Morris needed medical treatment after the early-morning incident.

Deputies were sent to help police in Cowpens arrest Morris on criminal sexual conduct warrants.

A deputy involved in serving the warrants said he and his partner went inside the home to find Morris. The deputy says he noticed a fire coming from a back bedroom and Morris leaving the room.

Sheriff's Lt. Tony Ivey said investigators decided Morris intentionally set the fire. He's charged with second-degree arson and five counts of attempted murder. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
