Demolition Planned For Spartanburg Public Housing Complex In Disrepair

Posted: Updated:

The Cammie Clagett apartments in Spartanburg's Highland community could begin to be demolished by this time next year.

The Spartanburg Housing Authority's Executive Director Harry Byrd said the buildings need $12 million in improvements.

He said it would be more cost-effective to demolish the complex and build new mixed-income housing in that area.

Many residents have already moved out.

There are mildew and water pipe problems there.

Putting mixed-income housing at that location would be in line with what Spartanburg and the national housing leaders are moving toward.

"We're taking away the concentrated poverty, we're going to remove it, it's going to directly impact the safety and the crime level," Byrd said.

The Spartanburg Housing Authority first needs approval of a tax credit application by the state before it can move forward.

This project will be phased and it will take the city and community partner's support to be fully successful.
