NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC -

The State Department of Public Safety has provided WBTW dash cam video of when a North Myrtle Beach Police officer was charged with DUI while driving a squad car that was allegedly involved in a minor crash.

WBTW requested the video in which authorities arrested officer William Norton just before noon on March 14 in the Burgess Community on the South End.

City spokesperson Pat Dowling says Norton is an officer with the city's department of public safety's K-9 unit and that, when he was stopped, he was off duty but driving his patrol car.

During the video, which is of somewhat poor quality, Norton can be seen rifling through his wallet for some time and drops several times.

A sobriety field test is also shown on the dash cam video and Norton has a gash on his head that appears to have come from the crash. During a test where Norton is asked to stand on one foot and count, Norton appears to fail twice -- and is then handcuffed.

Once in the police car, he is read his rights. After spitting what appears to be a mouthguard out in the car, Norton appears to squirm in his seat, continually looking back and down at the handcuffs.

The officer was allegedly involved in a crash that damaged a sign.

Norton was taken to an area hospital in a police car before he was booked.

Just after the arrest, Norton was place on restricted administrative assignment. Dowling says that is typically referred to as "desk duty". Dowling just after the arrest that Norton has no law enforcement authority and he has turned in his car, badge, and other law enforcement related equipment.
