Some NC lawmakers want governor's order canceled

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Some North Carolina legislators say Gov. Pat McCrory went too far with an executive order last summer about how to enforce a new law on leaking trash trucks and want it canceled.

A legislative committee on environmental matters recommended Wednesday legislation that includes terminating McCrory's order. Lawmakers begin the 2014 session next month.

The law says drivers shouldn't be cited by state officers for leaking trucks if the liquid originates from rainwater. But McCrory said the law appeared to conflict with other standards and told officers to keep citing trucks with leaking precipitation that pass through solid waste.

Some lawmakers believe McCrory's rewrote the law on his own.

Committee co-chairwoman Rep. Ruth Samuelson of Charlotte says she hopes a legislative solution can be found this session to address McCrory's concerns.
