2 Southern states deny thousands of license plates each year

JOHNSON CITY, TN -

We've all seen the personalized license plates that are tough to figure out.

In fact, license plates must meet a certain standard. And, they must make it past a special group of DMV workers who sort out some of the more provocative plates.

In both Tennessee and Virginia, the department of motor vehicles receives some requests that will never make it to print.

Last year, Tennessee denied nearly 1000 license plates because they did not meet the standard of decency set forth by the department of motor vehicles.

Virginia also has a long list of plates that were denied by a chosen group of DMV employees, who compare the request against the state's rules for personalized license plates.
