Some Upstate Schools Will See Increase In Police Presence

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office is taking two bold steps to increase its presence around local school campuses.

The first measure will allow off-duty deputies to use their patrol cars to take their kids to and from school. The off-duty officers will be able to observe traffic flows and look for any drivers who place others in danger. Those off-duty officers can write traffic tickets.

“We can prevent someone driving recklessly threw a school zone, where they don't hit a student or crossing guard or cause an accident,” said Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

The second measure is a partnership with the school district. It will allow deputies to use a school's wireless network to stop at the school and do incident reports.

“Instead of going all the way back to Walhalla they can come to the school and do an incident report here,” said Watt.

With the increased law enforcement presence, the Sheriff’s Office says deputies do not want to alarm citizens, but be proactive to protect students, parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators.

Oconee County isn't the first area to use a police presence to improve safety. District 55 in Laurens County has plans to have a Sheriff's Office substation on campus to keep officers close-by.

Also Plain Elementary in Simpsonville has seen success in having a substation on campus for law enforcement.
