Cherokee Co. Launches Partnership To Reduce Traffic Deaths

Expect to see more law enforcement on roadways in Cherokee County this week. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is partnering with SC Highway Patrol and three other agencies to target drunk and dangerous drivers.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller says this effort is needed more than ever. In 2012 Cherokee County saw five traffic deaths. That number jumped to 8 last year. So far this year Cherokee County has already seen eight traffic deaths.

“Already there are eight families that won't be home with their loved ones this Christmas,” said Sheriff Mueller. “For us in law enforcement, that's heart breaking."

Sheriff Mueller says with numbers like this his department just doesn't have the manpower or the time to wait until the 100 Deadly Days of Summer campaign to address roadway safety.

“It’s huge nowadays with budget cuts,” said Mueller. “With every agency we are short manpower wise. None of us have the staffing levels that we had."

Starting now agencies will increase patrols, set up weekend checkpoints and educate young drivers on distracted driving.

“If we can just save one life then it's worth it all,” said Lt. Brian Mullinax with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Mueller says you can help keep roads safe by reporting impaired drivers by dialing *HP.

Mueller says you are most likely to encounter a drunk driver between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Numbers from the State Office of Highway Safety show Cherokee County isn't the only area dealing with deadly wrecks. Some counties have already surpassed last year’s totals.
