Durham Rescue Mission provides meals, baskets to needy

Posted: Updated:

The Durham Rescue mission and dozens of volunteers prepared Easter meals and put together baskets for those in need for the annual Easter Community Pig Pickin’ Dinner and Easter Basket Giveaway Friday.

Volunteers began preparing the food Thursday night around 7 p.m. The Durham Rescue Mission cooked 700 pounds of pork and 1,000 hot dogs.

They also gave away more than 1,100 Easter baskets.

Friday's activities included a free barbecue dinner for the homeless and families in need. The baskets will go to at-risk children in the Durham community. Families will also be given free clothing items and free bags of food.

The meal is scheduled for 11 a.m.
