SC teen dies in boating accident

Toledo, OH -

Two people are dead and two others missing after a boating accident on Lake Erie in Ohio. Among the dead is 17-year-old Paige Widmer of Pelion, South Carolina.

A spokesperson for the Ottawa County, Ohio Sheriff's Office said an overnight collision also took the life of 33-year-old Amy Santus. The Coast Guard said two men remain missing and the search is set to resume for them Friday morning.

They were all on board a 21-foot Tracker Boat, which was discovered with its stern partially submerged Thursday morning on a reef near the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant east of Toledo.

The first body was found by a private boater and the U.S. Coast Guard found the second body. Both of the women were wearing life jackets.

A truck and boat trailer belonging to the group were located at a boat ramp nearby.

The other two occupants of the boat have not been found. The Coast Guard, federal, local and Canadian resources are all aiding in the search for the remaining two people.

Widmer attended Pelion High School where a prayer vigil was held for the teen who was a member of the school's volleyball team. She was reportedly on a trip with her family for spring break.

Even though school is out, the district said they were bringing in counselors for the students.

Dozens of drivers have filed complaints with the South Carolina Department of Transportation over loose gravel along a stretch of I-85. Officials said the complaints, which topped out at between 6 and 8 per day last week, stem from gravel that's damaged vehicles between Highway 14 and 129, where crews are working on a two-year-long resurfacing project.
