Pasco mix-up sends registration notices to wrong drivers

PASCO COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The vehicle registration information of hundreds of drivers in Pasco County were sent to the wrong person in a mix-up that led to the firing of a contractor.

The incident involved about 1,900 people, Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano confirmed to News Channel 8. Drivers with birthdays in May who have more than one vehicle registered got someone else’s information for the second vehicle.

The information included names, dates of birth and driver’s license numbers, but not social security numbers.

“They messed up,” Fasano said, regarding contractor Cass Data and Mailing Services of Ft. Walton Beach.

Cass Data and Mailing Services, a contractor Fasano says was already in place when he was appointed as tax collector, sent the incorrect paperwork to the tax collector’s office, which sent out the forms. Fasano said the contractor has since been fired and the work will now be handled in-house by tax collector employees.

Fasano also wants the company to provide identity theft protection for those affected. Cass did not return a call seeking comment.

The mix-up is concerning to Linda Paradiso, who noticed something was wrong when a Trinity man’s information and an unfamiliar car were listed on her renewal notice. Her information, in turn, would likely have ended up in someone else’s hands.

“I’ve been a victim of identity theft several years ago and I know what it’s like and I’m not looking to go down that road again,” Paradiso said.

Each person’s mixed-up renewal information was sent to just one person, and officials have a record of who received it, Fasano said.

“If that information like their driver’s license info is used in any way, we’ll know who’s using it and we’ll be able to report that to the local law enforcement,” he said.
