According to the 2014 American State Litter Scorecard, South Carolina ranked dead last for the nation’s dirtiest state.

South Carolina used to promote the state slogan “Keep it Beautiful South Carolina.” This was an active slogan to prevent littering and encourage recycling, but has since been abandoned. Six years ago the state was ranked 44th.

The scorecard also found that South Carolina has a high population of younger people. Studies have shown that people from the ages of 16-25 are more likely to litter.

Palmetto Pride is the state’s anti-litter organization and they work on grants and projects to keep South Carolina clean.

"I just think everybody needs to be concerned. We have a very supportive core group in every county and all over the state that really do care, but I think everybody has to work together to create a new social norm that says that littering is not acceptable," said Sarah Lyles, Co-Director of Palmetto Pride.

The state was also named second for the most wasteful, due to lack of recycling.
