PICS: Huge Tornado Kills 16 In Arkansas; Other Twister Kills 1 In Oklahoma

VILONIA, Ark. -

The National Weather Service is warning that the central and southern U.S. will see more destructive storms today, with powerful winds, very large hail and possibly tornadoes.

Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana are facing the greatest risk.

Meanwhile, emergency officials in Arkansas have begun searching for survivors in the debris left by a powerful tornado that carved an 80-mile path of destruction through suburban Little Rock last night, killing at least 16 people. The tornado that slammed into Vilonia grew to about half a mile wide.

The National Weather Service in North Little Rock says it appears the twister could have been an " EF3 or greater," which means winds greater than 136 mph. Meteorologist Jeff Hood says officials are making sure utilities are cut off in the area to prevent fires.

Another tornado killed a person in northeastern Oklahoma, before crossing into Kansas and destroying 60 to 70 homes and injuring 25 people in the city of Baxter Springs.
