Court order stops Raleigh computer business from accepting money

A Raleigh computer-repair business was ordered to stop accepting money for work Friday after 24 customers complained the company misled them.

Raleigh Geeks was put under court order to stop collecting money or creating contracts with customers for computer repairs by North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.

The attorney general’s office said Raleigh Geeks accepted payment for repairs up front and did not complete work when agreed upon.

Some consumers would get no response from the comp nay or would be told the repairs would be completed soon, the attorney general's office said.

Cooper said the company would sometimes returned computers in worse condition than when they were brought in to for repair. In other cases, Raleigh Geeks would not return units at all.

Cooper said he filed the lawsuit and submitted a request for a restraining order after 24 customers said Raleigh Geeks either returned computers that were still broken or gave bad information about repairs.

“Taking money up front, keeping someone’s computer for months, and then giving it back still broken is no way to do business,” Cooper said. “Customers who paid for repairs that never happened deserve their money and their computers back.”

Cooper’s office said Raleigh Geeks is also known as Caveman Computers, ProTech Computers and Fuquay Computer Center. The company has locations in Raleigh, Apex, Fuquay-Varina and Garner, Cooper said.

“When you pay someone for repair work, you expect to get your property back on time and in working order,” Cooper said. “Take precautions in case a fix-it job doesn’t go the way it should.”

Cooper's office said to follow these tips when getting an electronic device repaired:

  • Do not pay in full up front. Wait until the unit has been repaired to your satisfaction before full payment is made.
  • Turn on your device as soon you receive it. Do not leave the store until you know the unit is working as desired.
  • Try paying with credit card. If the device isn't repaired as expected, charges can be disputed with the credit card comp nay.
