HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. - Firefighters have located one body in the rubble following a house fire on Shining Rock Trail in Waynesville, according to Town Manager Marcy Onieal.

Waynesville Fire Chief Joey Webb says the home was cooled down around 3:30pm Wednesday and crews were able to get inside to investigate.

Later, they found a body inside the rubble. The remains have been sent to the medical examiner to determine the identity and a cause of death.

We're told there were roughly 50 firefighters from 6 to 7 departments at the scene Wednesday morning. The house was a 2-story, 5,000 square foot home.

Webb says the homeowners called 911 around 2:48am and said there was a fire in the kitchen. When crews arrived, the fire was shooting through the roof. Due to the location, crews had to shuttle water up the mountain road to the house. .

Firefighters got the flames under control around 4:30am. They say the main part of the house was destroyed, but the guest house/garage was saved.
