COLUMBUS, N.C. -

Tryon Lindabury will never forget his years spent in the air.

“We would go over for six months at a time in B-52s,” says veteran Tryon Lindabury.

As a pilot in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s, Lindabury was deployed overseas on multiple occasions during the Vietnam War

“I had complete confidence in my own crew and with the crews we were flying with,” says Lindabury. We would fly in formations which allowed us to jam enemy radars and give them all kinds of problems."

During his eight years in the military, Lindabury navigated almost every model of the B-52. He also got behind the controls of a CH3 helicopter serving in more than 250 missions.

Those experiences earned Lindabury numerous decorations and medals, but what he cherishes now is the feeling of accomplishment that was only recently acknowledged.

“It brought tears to my eyes to have actual folks standing on the side and instead of throwing eggs, cheering you and saying thank you."

Last year, Lindabury was invited to participate in his very first parade in downtown Columbus honoring veterans.

While he feels blessed to have been able to serve and live to share his experience, Lindabury only regrets that fellow comrades didn't get the recognition they deserved.

So this Memorial Day, Lindabury asks that you remember all servicemen and women.

A simple ‘thank you’ is also a story worth sharing.
