RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh police officer was shot in the leg by another officer Thursday morning while responding to a call of a man armed with a gun at a north Raleigh apartment complex.

Officers responded to an assault call at 11410-102 Colbert Creek Loop shortly after 2 a.m. When they arrived on scene, the officers encountered the armed man, 28-year-old Joshua Daniel Timberlake.

During the encounter with Timberlake, Sgt. J.D. Malzahn discharged his weapon hitting Officer K.J. Barefoot, 31, in the left leg, authorities said. Barefoot was transported to WakeMed where he was treated and released.

Timberlake has been charged with one count of assault on a female.

The circumstances surrounding Barefoot's shooting are still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
