Pitt Co. deputies tweet arrests of child support offenders

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Hundreds of folks in Eastern North Carolina followed the Pitt County Sheriff's Office as they arrested six people.

Deputies with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Child Support Enforcement Unit and officers with Pitt County Probation and Parole conducted a virtual ride along through Twitter on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

The public got a first-hand look a what happens when deputies and probation officer teamed up to seek out non-custodial parents not paying their court-ordered child support via Twitter.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said it expected the Twitter ride-along to have an added level of excitement because they focused on absconders that were harder to find.

"We are often adding new weapons to our arsenal — this time, we're doing it 140 characters at a time," explained Sheriff Neil Elks. “It is yet another tool used to reach out to the community, display transparency, and at the same time, help us do our job.”

Elks says the Sheriff’s Office’s primary concern is to enforce that each child receive financial support from their non-custodial parent.

The public can “ride” with the officers and deputies anytime by following @PittSheriff on Twitter. Officers and deputies tweet activity as it happens.
